5-Axis Machining

At Avantus Aerospace, we work with our family of companies to ensure that we possess the technology, skills and resources to fulfill our clients’ diverse needs.

Through the use of CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machining, we are able to offer absolute precision through small and large-scale production runs. In many cases, the level of detail offered by 3-Axis XNX milling, but in some instances, especially within the aerospace and defence industries, greater levels of detail are required. Although it is possible to achieve this detail with a 3-axis machine via a staged production approach, it is quicker and more efficient to utilise 4 or 5-axis machines.

5-axis CNC machining

3-axis machines are able to operate three different machining parts, which work simultaneously side to side, back to front and up and down on the X, Y and Z axes respectively. 4-axis CNC machines utilise an additional axis – the A-axis, which rotates the part that is being worked on, allowing for four sides of the component to be machined. A 5-axis CNC mill offers greater flexibility and precision by offering the capacity for the machined part to be rotated along two additional axes, the A-axis, which rotates along the X axis, the B axis which rotates along the Y axis, and the C axis on the Z axis.

Although there are 5 axes available, a 5-axis CNC machine can only rotate along two axes, either a and C or B and C, rotating either the spindle or the workpiece. 5-axis machining offers unrivalled precision and detail, significantly streamlining the process of making complex parts by machining components which will otherwise require several machines.

At Avantus, we have access to state of the art 5-axis CNC machines, which allow us to offer precision services to clients across the globe.
